Ocean's Fury - Limited Edition Prints Available by Nightlyre Ocean's Fury - Limited Edition Prints Available by Nightlyre
This painting is now available in a limited edition series of prints from my store!

I had originally intended to finish this fellow off in my typical lineart + color fashion, but I've been in a bit of a digital painting mood lately. So, well, this is the result of that. Enjoy!

This was painted in approximately 10 hours, not including the original sketch. I've been trying to improve the speed at which I do my digital work, focusing more on the overall look of the piece rather than tiny details that disappear at screen resolution anyway.

If you're interested, here is the process by which this beastie went from sketch to final painting:

Thanks! Dynamism was my main focus on this guy. I was surprised on how much detail I was able to do in the amount of time he took to paint. I'm still trying to kick the habit of zooming in too far, but this was a step in the right direction.

Is zooming in too far not good? I personally love dazzling details. I had a discussion with my dad about this yesterday though. He used to do airbrushing and made this elaborate illustration on his car. It was very impressive, but he said he was working too detailed. It's great if you stand close to appreciate all the detail, but from a distance the details are not noticeable anymore. That doesn't seem such a problem, but I guess the issue is that it can become so detailed that the illustration becomes distorted, right? But then, it's also a consideration if you're going to show it on dA at 750px wide or print an A1 sized poster. How large are your paintings usually in print?

It's certainly a question of finding the right balance. It's very tempting to zoom right in and start working the details before the whole piece is properly laid out, which can lead to either a poor overall design, or worse... zooming back out and realizing you have to now apply that level of detail throughout the piece. The latter can be intimidating! It's easy to lose the sense of dynamism and action if you get too precise, as well - some parts of a painting come off better if they are allowed to remain hazy or blurred.

The largest prints I've done have been 18" x 24" at 300ppi, but more typically I do prints at 8.5" x 11". After making a few mistakes with earlier files, though, I've started doing all of my work as though I might intend to print it at 18" x 24" - just in case!

This kind of things scares me. Not spiders, not demons... not the fucking boogie man, but if a colossal sea dragon popped up to say hi... I might just have a stroke and die.

Seriously though? I won't swim in the ocean, at least not in murky water where I can't tell what's under me. The stuff I know is there is frightening enough, heh. :)
