Old Smokey by Nightlyre Old Smokey by Nightlyre

There was once a village in the shadow of an enormous, craggy mountain. Often, great plumes of smoke would billow from the mountain's top. The villagers had heard of "volcanoes" from traveling minstrels, so they felt certain that description fit the bill for their mountain. They named it "Old Smokey".

One day, an artist in search of inspiration came wandering through the village. She'd seen volcanoes before, and this mountain looked nothing like what she had seen! Curious, she arranged an expedition up, up, up, into it's treacherous, craggy peaks. There, she found a cave, and in it, an enormous beast, with scales the color of bronze, deep asleep. Now and then, it would exhale a billowing cloud of dark smoke which would go venting through the cavern's ceiling.

The rest of the expedition wanted to leave, preferably with great haste! But the artist was undaunted. She had heard that dragons were very proud creatures, and usually not prone to ferocity unless provoked. She roused the beast from its slumber with great caution. While the dragon was a bit grumpy at having been awakened - for he, like many of us, was not a morning person! - he proved to be quite amiable once the artist explained that she would dearly like to draw a portrait of the real "Old Smokey".

That's the kind of dragon I love to imagine most. A bit scary at first and a little grumpy, but in the end sociable and most of all calm.

I lie the reverse ere in that short story, a volcano way back when be referred to as a dragon not a minstrel saying the reverse, but makes sense for this story. I do like though the concept for this idea of old Smokey, as I fist think if a bear with that name. The bronze dragon itself is nice and I think make quite a muse for an artist I do say, the cave background with all them stalactites is a nice addition to me, a dragon feature fitting to a scaled creature as such. :)

Glad you caught that! A different world, different rules... and I thought it'd be fun for them to look to mundane explanations first before finding out the truth was a lot more extraordinary!

Well makes that much more unique, and reverse universe like, so yeah makes it seem like modern times, in a medieval setting, This is where the truth is more unbelievable than the theory behind it.

Were you wishing you could get a dragon to model for you when you wrote your little story bit? :D

Actually, the story sort of sprung from the picture in this case. I was calling the sketch "Old Smokey", as he had plumes of smoke coming from his nostrils. They never made it into the colored piece, but the name stuck... so I wanted a fun explanation for it. :)

I've been doing that teeth thing with a lot of my dragons lately! Perhaps I've been looking at too many crocodiles. ;)

I do seem to recall you saying something about liking spikes on your dragons. Apparently you like them in your caves as well! :-)

Nice job, Nightlyre! I really like the subtle color shades, and the shading.

Caves should be nice and spiky! I got to visit Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico when I was pretty young, and it made a lifelong cave lover out of me. The more stalactites, the better!

I know I posted this one on the incentives a while back, but for some reason I had completely neglected to get it put up here and on the new site. Problem now solved. :)
