Just looked at my journal and realized I really should change it! Heh. Sorry for the radio silence of late, but I've been off working on multiple big projects and bouncing between them like a hamster on coffee. One of them is almost ready to debut, the updated Red Nebula Studios website. It feels like I've been working on it forever! Serves me right not being happy just using an existing CMS, but what can I say? I might not be brilliant at it, but I love coding websites. With every project, I learn a bit more about PHP, MySQL, Javascript... you name it. My idea of a fun evening. (I know, I know, neeeeeeerrrrd.)

The new site will include a nice fancy art gallery, but not to worry - I will continue to post all of my artwork here as well. The main difference is that I'll also be blogging and including works in progress on the site that you might not see here. There will also be resources available there - tutorials and such. I'm bringing costuming back into my main focus, along with the crafting I've been doing lately. It's an art I really enjoyed in years past, and want to make sure I don't lose track of the skills, tips, and tricks I've learned along the way! To that end, I'll be working on tutorials covering everything from casting latex to sewing.

Speaking of costuming, that's the other huge project that has been consuming 85% of my waking hours (and not a few of my stranger dreams) of late. I apologize for not sharing this one as I go, but I want to debut it when it is complete. I've been taking an absolute ton of photos along the way, so I'll be able to share in detail how I created it. It isn't like any costume I've created before, and has been constantly pushing me to learn new skills and improve on old ones. My aim is to have it done well before Phoenix Comicon 2013 (end of May), so unless our house gets hit by a meteor or something, expect to see photos by then. And perhaps a teaser or two beforehand.

And, just so no one thinks I forgot about them, I'll continue leaving the previously finished request drawings and the ones I have yet to do at the bottom of my journal.

Details on the request rules can be found on the previous journal entry. Requests are currently closed for strategic catching-up purposes.

Hi all! I wanted to let you know I've got a sale going over at my Etsy store. For one thing, my holiday merchandise (the Holiday Magic card, Holiday Tangle card, and Holiday Tangle 5" x 7" print) are all 50% off their normal price, so it's a good chance to grab a few of them for next year. On top of that, if you enter the coupon code "welcome2013", you'll receive 10% off of your order, no matter how big or small! My post-Christmas/New Year sale will be going on until January 5th - but many of my items are one-of-a-kinds, so if there's one you really want, now's a good chance to get it!

I also wanted to say thank you to ~Iron-Ed for writing a charming story to go along with the request picture I drew for him! You can read it here. If you didn't know, the woman, dog, and goblin in his request belong to myself and my hubby, while the fox belongs to him. He included another of our goblins and one of our dragons in his story as well.

No new request drawings just yet, but I'll get there!

Getting there! Since the newest two request sketches involved two very cool creatures, Halloween seemed the perfect time to get them posted. C'mon, a fourteen-legged wolf beast and a beautifully freaky undead dragon? You guys are spoiling me.

Oh, and how cool is this? As a thank you for her request, ~eve-hawk wrote a story based on one of my pieces! The art is my interpretation of the darkspawn first approaching the Archdemon from Dragon Age... you can see the image here. The story she wrote takes it several steps further, delving into an alternate-universe reality from the point of view of the dragon itself. It can be found here.  Whether you're a Dragon Age fan or not, it stands alone as a very cool story.

If anyone happens to be in the vicinity, my husband and I shall be found touting our wares at the Tucson Comic Con this weekend (Nov. 3-4th). If you can't make it but want to see what we have, most of it is available from our Red Nebula Studios store, while handmade critters like the 'goyles can be found at my Etsy store, SarrahCreates. Mind, I'll have to temporarily shut down the Etsy store for the weekend since my handmade critters will be coming with us to the show, but it'll be back up and running next week.

And now for the status update!

In the meantime, a couple more requests have been a'sketched, and they were both epic fun! (Update - now with more thumbnails!)

Going to try a little experiment, here. It might not work, but you never know until you try!

I'm now open for requests... with some caveats.

  • This is for my deviantArt watchers only.

  • You suggest a subject, but I choose the medium. It might be anything from a sketch to a full digital painting, speedpainting practice, or maybe something completely different. Artistic freedom FTW.

  • I own the copyright to the final art and retain the right to post it online and to sell it if I so desire. (I won't sell anything that features your own distinctly original characters (OCs), or works based on intellectual properties I don't own. See the Q/A thing below for further details.)

  • I am comfortable with tasteful nudity and romantic scenes. Mild violence is fine. I decide what constitutes "tasteful" and "mild".

  • You can suggest multiple ideas, but I'll only do one per person at this time. So be careful what you ask for. :mwahaha:

  • Suggesting something does not guarantee that I will make art of it! Please don't be upset if I choose not to do your request.
Q/A

So I can request anything I want to?
Sure. Though if I may make a suggestion, keep in mind the contents of my gallery and the kind of work I generally enjoy doing. Fantasy creatures are my specialty. I also enjoy some sci-fi and horror stuff. I like critters of all kinds. I love designing fantasy/sci-fi/horror critters. I also enjoy good stories. Inspire me, challenge me, I might just take you up on it.

What was that jargon about OCs and intellectual properties?
I won't sell artwork based on characters or IPs that I don't own or have permission to make money from. That runs the gamut from BioWare fanart all the way to your own distinctly original characters. Note I say "distinctly original"; if you request "a red dragon", and there is nothing that distinguishes it from any other random red dragon out there, it is not an OC. An original character is just that - a character. They have a story, they have a personality.

It's worth noting that I'd be far more likely to do artwork based on your original character if their story and personality interest me.

Will you read my 1,200 page novel/fanfic/epic poem/thesis and make art based on it?
Maybe, if I have time. You'd probably have better luck suggesting something more specific, though.

So if you do art based on my story/OC, can I use it?
If I make art specifically based on your own story or original character(s), you may use it for any non-commercial purpose you want. Feel free to crop it and use it as an avatar, or print out a copy for yourself, or whatever, as long as you credit me (Sarrah Wilkinson) and have a link to this site (nightlyre.deviantart.com) somewhere in the vicinity. You may not, however, use it to make money, whether by selling prints or as a book cover or anything else of the like. If you really like it and simply MUST use it as a CD cover or something, note me and we can talk high-resolution files and licensing fees.

Are you doing commissions? Can I request something more specific if I give you money?
No, I'm sorry, but commissions are closed. It's that whole artistic freedom thing again.

What do you get out of this?
Fun. Inspiration. Practice. A chance to connect with my watchers. I'm shy (no, seriously), and I tend to 'speak' better through art than through words.

If you wish to be thankful in a more tangible manner, make art back at me, or throw some points at my donation bar, or buy something from our store. However, I require none of these things in return. This is my "thank you" for my watchers.

So what if I just watch you, and request something, and then un-watch you afterwards?
That's your choice. Kinda mean, though. If you like my artwork, stick around. :)

I have another question or need clarification!
Ask away.
The last couple of weeks have been something of an emotional rollercoaster, by which I at least mean there were as many "ups" as there were "downs". I don't talk about where I'm at on an emotional level online much, so bear with me, this is kinda new for all of us. I've had a hard time answering posts about the halt of the Planes of Eldlor webcomic... most were quite supportive, and I thank you for that. Many people said it seemed sudden. It seems strange to me, who felt it coming for a long time.

I wasn't burned out, not exactly. The decision actually came after I'd spent a solid 9 hours inking a pair of pages.  See, I'm... a bit of a workaholic - to put it mildly. I have a bad habit of driving myself crazy on a project while simultaneously never feeling quite like I've done enough. I felt bad if I took a day off. I had to set a timer so I would stop working and relax and spend time with my husband, play some games, or work on personal projects. Looking ahead, there was no light at the end of that tunnel.  I was neck-deep in a several-year-long project that I was going to obsess over until the bitter end (or until I wrecked my wrist or my eyesight or really did simply burn out!)

Sometimes, holding on hurts worse than letting go. I think that's something we can all relate to, on some level.

So, what now?

Well, now I've given myself a rare gift, something I haven't felt like I've had for years. It was something I had as a kid, but always took for granted. It may seem obvious to some of you, but to me, it's like a breath of fresh air. I've given myself permission to create, unconditionally.

I definitely will be uploading work to deviantArt on a more regular basis. I might even throw some sketchdumps straight into my scraps folder, too, so if you're into such things, make sure my scraps are included on your watch list. I wanted to keep them out of my main folders for folks who'd prefer not to be spammed by my random brainspasms.  I've also still got a backlog of fanart that I want to do - primarily BioWare related, but other things as well. Images and one-off/short-story comic ideas have been swimming in my mind for ages just waiting for a chance to get out. I also want to branch out a bit, try out some techniques, media, and subjects I am less familiar with.  I already have some sculptures I need to get uploaded here, with more to come. Perhaps even, dare I say it, a return to costuming!

Additionally, I plan to take a gorram day off now and then and not feel bad about it.

Lest I have any of you worried, there is plenty more fantasy artwork to come. Dragons and other such lovely beasties took up permanent residence in my heart when I was barely big enough to walk, and they never let me stray for long. And, well, you try and tell a dragon "no".

I've also gotten a surprisingly big influx of new watchers recently. Thank you very much - I feel quite honored! I'm not usually this verbose in random blog posts. Honest. :)

Phoenix Comicon is the best convention I've been to, and I'll wager one of the best shows out there.  We've had an amazing time the last two years, and it's hard to believe it's almost time again!

The convention is Memorial Day weekend, May 24-27th at the Phoenix Convention Center. They're anticipating a great turnout, the guest list is amazing, and there's always something fun going on - panels, parties, costumers, shopping, displays - you name it.

Red Nebula Studios (our small business) will be at booth #521 - our first time in a booth! We've got a ton of new items we didn't have at Phoenix last year, and we're premiering some new charms and OOAK sculptures for the first time ever at a show.  We'll also have the Spiny Desert Drake, a limited edition Phoenix Comicon 2012 exclusive print!  There will only be 100 copies of this print - EVER - and each one is hand-numbered and signed by myself and my husband (who flat colored the image for me).

Here's a preview of the exclusive print:

If you are anywhere close enough to make it to Phoenix for Memorial Day weekend, don't miss this show!

...I'm bad at coming up with titles for things.

Well, the :iconcolor-me-club: contest for December is now in the voting stage, and there were some amazing coloring jobs on my Griffon Rider lineart!  If you look down and to the left on my main page, I have a favorites gallery up showcasing any of my linearts that other people have colored.  If you color any lineart I put up, be sure to let me know!

The contest :iconmarybunnie: is running is still going on. Take a look here: [link]

And finally, :iconplanussea: was curious to see what would happen if Arid (from Planes of Eldlor) answered this little character questionnaire.  The results were, well, typical, for him.  Note that any numbers with a letter afterward (13b, etc.) were my own additions, so if you want to have fun tormenting your characters with this quiz, feel free to remove those.

Rules:
1) Pick one of your FCs/OCs.
2) Fill in the questions/statements as if you were your FC/OC.
3) Tag 3 people at the end of the quiz.

1. What's your name?
Arid.

2. Do you know why you were named that?
Yes.

3. Are you single or taken?
Single.

4. Have any abilities or powers?
I am trained in some weapons.  I will have access to certain magics only if I am accepted as a paladin.

5. Stop being a Mary Sue.
This is a woman's name?

6. If you were to get in a fight with a strong wrestler, do you think you'd win?
Most likely.

7. Have any family members?
Yes.

8. How about pets?
Pets? No. I don't think Takan'dor would appreciate being called a "pet".

9. Tell me something that you don't like?
Liars.

10. Something that you do like?
Decent food.

11. Do you have any activities/hobbies that you like to do?
Reading.

12. Have you ever hurt anyone in any way before?
Yes.

13. Ever... killed anyone before?
Yes.

13b. Okay, time out. You aren't allowed to answer every question with one word.
I have not.

13c. I count eight answers so far comprised of a single word!
That isn't every question.  Besides, I read the rules of this little game of yours.  It did not specify the required length of answers.

13d. So you don't even care to elaborate on the fact that you've killed someone?
No.

13e. *grumble* Right.  Moving on...

14. What kind of race are you?
Mal'tarevonen.

14b. AHEM!
...fine. If you must know, it means that I am half dark elven, and half elven.

14c. That's better.
Next question.

15. Name your worst habits.
Talking too much.

15b. ...jerk.
*shrug*

16. Do you look up to anyone at all?
Yes.

16b. Figures.

17. Gay, straight, or bi?
Disinterested.

17b. Really?
...straight.

17c. Thought so.

18. Do you go to school?
I'm currently in training.  Otherwise, no.

19. Ever want to marry and have kids one day?
Doubtful.

20. Do you have any fangirls/fanboys?
...what?

21. What are you most afraid of?
Whatever a "fangirl" is.

22. *snicker* Okay, okay. What colour is your hair?
Black. The streak is hereditary.

23. Eyes?
Yellow.

24. What do you usually wear?
I'm not particular, as long as it's clean.  And preferably not... shabby.

25. Okay. What's your religion?
...uncertain at this point.

26. Do you wish this quiz is over?
*shrug*

27. Well, it's still not over.
As you will.

28. Anyway, where do you live?
Nowhere.  I suppose Miriel and I will return to Port Richmond when all of this is over.

29. What class are you?
Do you mean social class? One presumably must belong to a society for that to apply.

30. How many friends do you have?
One. ...well, a couple, I suppose.

31. Wow. If you could change anything about you, what would you change?
Is that not obvious?

31b. Er... no?
A pity.

31c. Oookay...

32. If you had a million dollars, what would you do with it? And I don't want no cheap answer, ya hear?
"Dollars" is a form of money, I assume? I have already traded a large sum of money for something I consider more important.

32b. That's still kind of a cheap answer.
So be it.

33. What are your thoughts on pie?
I like pie.

34. Alright. What's your favourite food?
Sweet foods. Fruit, and the like.

35. Favourite drink?
Water. NOT the kind you get in pubs.

36. What is your favourite place?
I've enjoyed the open road.

37. Least favourite?
Siedlisk. The last place I lived.

38. Do you still want the quiz to end?
Whenever you like.

39. Yeah. Well, it's over. D:
Good.

40. Now, tag 3 people.

40b. ...I have no idea who to tag.  If you want to do this, go for it. :D

Well, okay, just a couple of them.  First off, my Griffon Rider lineart won third place in the :iconcolor-me-club: November contest! Not only that, but because it was one of the five finalists, it is one of the linearts that can be colored for their December contest.  If you want to join in the mayhem, you can read up about the contest here: [link]

Secondly, one of the deviants I follow, :iconmarybunnie:, is hosting a contest! To enter, make art (doesn't matter what kind) of one of her wonderfully unique characters.  The grand prize is a one-of-a-kind, custom mini-doll, and let me tell you, that is an incredibly worthwhile prize right there.  At the moment, the deadline for entries is February 1st, but that may change.  To find out more about this contest, take a look at her journal here: [link]

I suddenly realized there were a few things I'd meant to put up on deviantArt a while ago, and never got around to!  So expect a small flurry of activity.  I'm thinking I might add in the photos of all of my costumes here - hopefully that will get me inspired to work on some new ones!

I also spent some time going through any of the art that I have available in our Red Nebula Studios ArtFire store and adding in a link to the item.  If you haven't gotten a chance to check out our store, take a look!  We have all kinds of high fantasy goodies, like art prints, bookmarks, pinback buttons, and charms, as well as more specialty items on occasion.

I can hardly believe it, but our webcomic, Planes of Eldlor, has been up and running for exactly two years.  During that time, we've updated once a week, every week, without fail.  We've gotten nearly 2000 comments in total, and according to Google Analytics, the comic site has received over 337,000 visits (well over a million page views, but that can be deceptive!).  We've met a number of fantastic fans and friends at conventions, and hope to meet many more in the future.  We're very excited to be able to share this story - here's to many more years to come!

Incidentally, it is also Robbie and my 5th wedding anniversary.  :iconcheerplz:

My Blu-ray disk of The Last Unicorn arrived in the mail today.  YAY!

I'm excited for two reasons.  For one, the Blu-ray version includes the original soundtrack (not by default, but it is there!), which leaves out the annoying and thoroughly unnecessary censorship that was included on the DVD release of the film.  Molly Grue's first encounter with the unicorn has long been my favorite scene, and the censored version was far more offensive to me than any word has ever been.

The second reason is because of something I learned at Long Beach Comic Con last October.  I got to meet Peter S. Beagle, the author of The Last Unicorn, which was simply wonderful.  I've since read the book itself, and highly recommend it.  What I learned was rather sad, however, and something I want to spread the word on.  Peter ONLY gets compensation if you buy The Last Unicorn from Conlan Press; if you buy from Amazon or any other source, he doesn't get a penny.  If you are a fan of The Last Unicorn and plan to buy the Blu-ray version, please consider buying it straight from them!

As always, if you enjoy my work, please feel free to check out Planes of Eldlor, a weekly high fantasy webcomic co-written by my husband and myself, and drawn by me.  I am also temporarily filling in as the artist for Mysteries of the Arcana, a tarot-based fantasy/romance webcomic, which updates 2x per week.

Take care!

If you've heard me talk about it at all, you'd know that I love Dragon Age.  I mean, REALLY love Dragon Age.

The demo for Dragon Age 2 just came out a couple days ago, and so I downloaded it, and played through it, and... well...

Thank you, Bioware.  You just saved me $60.

Yup, we cancelled our pre-order.  *sigh* I knew there would be changes from the original, and that's fine.  I knew you could only play a human character in this iteration, and that's fine.  I knew it would be a frame narrative, and that's a cool idea.  I knew my character would be voiced this time around - yay! - and that the dialog was arranged a bit differently.  No problem.

I was getting a nervous feeling when I saw the first gameplay screenshots, but figured they could still be working on the graphics.  When the first gameplay video came out, I kind of had a resigned feeling of, "Oh well, I don't like how it looks, but I'll probably play it anyway because I enjoy the gameplay and the story."  The more I heard, the more the nervous feeling grew, but I stifled it and tried to stay excited.  After all, I love Dragon Age - I had to trust that they would treat the sequel right.

The demo was... meh.  I didn't hate it, but I was disappointed by several key things.  I still kept trying to justify the bad and seek out the good.  The characters look good (even though the expressions are exaggerated to the point of cartooniness and the fighting style looks like a DVD running 2x speed).  I want to see where the story goes - Gaider creates marvelous characters that I really cared about in Origins.  But I kept finding I didn't care a lick about the characters in the demo.  Some parts of the game looked good (Kirkwall!), and some parts looked... well, boring.  Flemeth was ridiculously awesome.  I want to see what's going on with Anders.  I want to know what happens!

BUT.

The gameplay has been reduced to a series of encounters, and strategy has been stripped.  Maybe it was just for the demo, but friendly fire was gone.  A fireball in the middle of the party hurt the bad guys, and left your own ranks untouched.  The fighting was... awful.  I played a rogue - I loves my rogues!  But the way she bounced around, I started to feel like I'd accidentally chose the class "kangaroo rat" instead.  Pogo-rogues aside, the game's art direction was... middling at best.  (What on earth did they do to the darkspawn?)  And don't get me started on Isabela's chest.  Just once, I want to see a game where women don't look like their upper torso is made of rigid plastic!  Breasts move, folks - and big breasts?  They move MORE.  (But Bioware is scared of breasts anyway... show a darkspawn exploding in a shower of blood, fine!  But Maker forbid you show a nipple!  *gasp*)

Still, I kept justifying.  I'd deal with what I didn't like, and play it for the story.

And then, I saw this: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Trailer

I suddenly remembered what kind of a game would be worth $60.

Sorry, DA2... I will see you in the bargain bucket.  :(

Holy frijoles, there's a lot going on right now!  Where to begin?

Well, first off... in addition to our webcomic, Planes of Eldlor, I will be temporarily stepping in as the artist for Mysteries of the Arcana, a webcomic written by J. Gray.  If you like my artwork, you might want to drop by there for updates twice - that's right, TWICE - every week, from now until the end of May.  So I'm going to be a bit busy!

Speaking of busy, Dragon Age 2 is coming out soon - I will try to keep my random "squee!!"s of joy to a minimum, so as not to disrupt the general peace of deviantArt.  I also pledge that comic work will always come before playtime.  I'll post new art here as often as I can as well.  I do check dA at least once a day, even if I'm not posting work, so feel free to leave comments or just say hello.

My husband and I will be in the Artist Alley at Phoenix Comicon this year, May 26th - 29th, if you want to come and meet us.  We'll have prints, bookmarks, buttons, and very possibly some cool treats for sale.  Speaking of which, I am working toward getting a store set up on ArtFire.  I will post more about this within a couple weeks, so stay tuned!

With that, it's back to work for me!

Hi all!

I don't have too many followers yet, but for those I do, let me quickly apologize for the spam of new images.  Well, not precisely new - most of the stuff I'm moving over to DeviantArt is some of my older work.  I want to get caught up with that, and then I'll start adding some of the newer work I've been doing - but I hope you're enjoying what you see so far!

I suppose I really should say something.

Hm.  Hi!

I'm Nightlyre, and have been going by that nickname pretty much for as long as the Internet has existed.  I do a bit of art-like stuff.  I've done a lot of costuming, though less recently than I would like.  I draw on pretty much every flat surface available to me.  My husband and I run a webcomic called Planes of Eldlor.  You should look at it, because it is free and updates weekly and has dragons in it.

While I've lurked on dA for ages and ages, it's only now that I'm beginning to post my work here.  I do have a website, though it's in some need of updating, but if you'd like to see a more extensive sampling of my work, check out Nightlyre.com, and the Dragon of the Week archives on our comic site.

That's all for now!
